The mission of the QOV Foundation is to cover ALL war
wounded and injured servicemembers and veterans from the War
on Terror whether physical or
psychological wounds with
Wartime quilts called Quilts of Valor (QOVS).
This
foundation is not about politics. It's about people.
Everyone who helps make a quilt is giving recognition and
thanks for those who choose to serve to keep us free. This
is a nationwide group of wartime quilters. Our local group
in the Long Beach, CA area are busy making LOTS of quilts.
So far we have made over 200. The national total is almost
18,000, but many more are needed.
On Make a Difference Day (Oct 25), the Volunteens of Long
Beach hosted a 12 hour sew-a-thon at Wilson High School.
During that time over 50 quilt tops were assembled. Now we
need yardage for the backs, binding and pillowcase.
In Jan, we will be repeating the event at another high
school in Lakewood, CA, so we will need to construct more
blocks for them to assemble, so even small cuts of fabric
helps! And, then. of course, we will need yardage for those
backs.
The high school students are learning a lifetime skill of
sewing while earning some of their 40 hours of service
learning (community service) needed before graduation. Most
of our schools no longer have home ec, so this generation
may not learn this skill without assistance from people like
us, and they are learning to give back in the community.
